Washington Redskins: One of the Most Successful Teams in the NFL

Washington Redskins: One of the Most Successful Teams in the NFL: The Washington Redskins is the American football team of Washington D.C. in the National Football League. They are a member of the NFC (National Football Conference) East Division based at the Redskins Park in Ashburn, Virginia. Based in Boston Massachusetts, the team started out as the Boston Braves in 1932. A year later, the team moved to the house of the Boston Red Sox, therefore changing the team’s moniker to Boston Redskins. After moving to another location, in Washington D.C., the team became known as the Washington Redskins since then.

The First Success: The first division title of the team came months after the relocation to Washington D.C. The Redskins won versus the Chicago Bears in the 1937 National Football League Championship Game. Three years after winning the championship game, the Redskins faced the Chicago Bears for the second time with a disappointing result. Until now, the Redskins’ loss to the Bears is still the worst loss when it comes to the score discrepancy (73-0) in the history of the NFL championship. The rivalry between the two teams continued in the following years, with them meeting again in NFL Championship games twice. The two teams had their moments – the Redskins won the 1942 championship and the Bears got the title the next year. The Downturn: After years of success in the NFL, the Washington Redskins had its downturn in the early 90s. With the retirement of the renowned Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, the team had a lot of coaching issues, having several head coaches for each year starting from 1993. Joe Gibbs returned, coaching the team for four years (from 2004 to 2007).

Team Achievements: During the years 1936, 1937, 1940, 1942, 1943, and 1945, the team (still named as Boston Braves) won the National Football League Division Championship. The team had been successful in 1972, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1999, and 2012 in the National Football Conference Division Championship. The team’s Super Bowl success came in 1982, 1987, and 1991. In the National Football League, the team came first in the years 1937 and 1942. The team’s Most Valuable Player awardees are Joe Theismann in 1983, Mark Moseley in 1972, and Marry Brown in 1982. As for the NFL Coach of the Year Award, George Allen (1971), Jack Pardee (1979), and Joe Gibbs (1982 and 1983) received it. The Redskins also had its Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Awardees including John Riggins (XVII), Doug Williams (XXII), and Mark Rypien (XXVI). In 2012, the Washington Redskins finished 1st place in the NFL season, losing to the Seattle Seahawks in a 24-14 run. In the same year, Robert Griffin was awarded as the NFL Rookie of the Year.
