Washington Capitals History and Profile: The professional ice hockey team was founded in 1974 by Abe Pollin. The team was created to join the National Hockey League as an expansion team. At first, the team has not made any success because they are lacking in professional players and experienced veterans. Because of the number of teams that are in the National Hockey League, the Capitals couldn’t really grab great players. They found it hard to get really competitive ones because the experienced and talented players are already signed up somewhere else.
Great Re-Beginnings: Even though the team didn’t have great beginnings, when David Poile was hired as the General Manager of the Capitals, the team had made a major push. He turned the team around and achieved victories. He had made deals that enabled him to sign up great hockey players such as Rick Green and Ryan Walter. The team has since developed a great defensive and great offensive lineup, which made them win matches and even achieve titles. Because of this, the talks about the Capitals leaving Washington have vanished. Thus, the team has retained its position and has since made big developments to improve their standings in the National Hockey League. Awards and Titles: Since the great turnaround of the Washington Capitals, the team has received awards such as getting third place in the Patrick Division. The Capitals has also received a lot of awards from the National Hockey League.
They have been awarded with the President’s Trophy in 2009 – 2010 season. They were also awarded with the Prince of Wales Trophy during the 1997 – 1998 season. The team’s members had also received numerous awards from the NHL.
