The Laker Girls
The professional cheerleading team consisting of only female athletes and/or dancers that cheers for one of the National Basketball Association or NBA’s most successful and popular teams the Los Angeles Lakers from the sidelines. The squad can usually be seen at all the home matches of the Lakers but there have been instances when the girls have performed and cheered the team on at neutral venues during the playoff matches and championship matches as well.
Each year, the squad is completely overhauled and new girls are drafted into the squad after auditions are held at the home stadium of the Los Angeles Lakers, at Staples Center and this audition is held every July, on the third Saturday of the month. One of the criterions for being considered is that all girls are to weigh not more than 130 lbs or less than 104 lbs and has to report with detailed curriculum vitae of their previous dancing experiences.
There have many famous personalities who have performed as the Laker Girls and one of those personalities includes Paula Abdul. Being a former Laker Girl herself as well as a successful choreographer, she is invited every year by the team to judge the auditions for the squad. A girl who is auditioning has to come prepared with her own routine, and she will also be shown two more routines which she will have to perform in front of the current batch of the Girls as well as the judges and the final decision is announced by Paula Abdul. After the audition for the Laker Girls gets over, it has become a customary tradition for Abdul, a lifelong Lakers fan, to take out the girls who made it to the squad as well as those who don’t for dinner in the city. The Patriots Cheerleaders for the Team from New England.
