Softball is widely portrayed as just a ladies sport but this is not completely true. Its a sport for everyone. As it is with most sports there are several competitive levels of softball. On a high school and collegiate level fast pitch softball is specifically a women’s athletic event. The best teams on the collegiate level compete in the NCAA Women’s College World Series. There are even ladies only adult leagues. Many men also play in adult softball leagues. Recreational co-ed leagues are generally slow pitch leagues. There are similarities and differences in the way that the two versions are played. Both require underhand pitching.
Fast pitch players use a 360 degree rotation on their pitches generating higher speeds hence the name fast pitch. Slow is played with a more casual semi circle pitch tossed at an arc between 6 to 12 feet high. Outside of the speed of the pitches the majority of the play is the same in both versions, except fast pitch softball players may be more skilled. There are also quite a few differences between softball and baseball, which may be more noticeable that the difference of the two versions of softball. The most apparent difference being the size of the ball. The variations of the style of pitching is also a glaring anomaly.
On average a softball is two to three inches larger in circumference than a hardball, and is also not quite as dense. The overall size of the field including the distance between bases is regulated differently in both sports. Contrary to popular belief the is a professional fast pitch league that drafts from the collegiate ranks, although is a small league and relatively unknown. There have been a number of professional leagues in history many have only lasted a few years before disbanding. All across America you can find adult slow pitch softball leagues. Some business arrange teams of employees and hold competitions against other companies or on occasion form leagues of their own. These teams may not be the most athletic but they enjoy the game, even at times under the influence of alcohol. If you are considering a recreational competitive sport it would not be a bad idea to find a local slow pitch league. You do not have to be the most athletic individual in the world to enjoy softball.
