She is the most decorated figure skater in the history of the United States and is widely regarded as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time.

Michelle Wingshan Kwan or Michelle Kwan was born in Torrance, California on 7th July, 1980 to Danny and Estella Kwan. She took an interest in figure skating at the age of five when her elder brother, Ron, and her sister Karen practiced on the ice. Ron was an ice-hockey player whereas her sister was into figure skating.

Her family endured financial hardships to be able to fund her children’s figure skating practice. Karen and Michelle Kwan were trained by Frank Carroll. After just one year of training, Michelle placed 9th at the Junior Figure Skating Championships. In 1994, she won her first international event in the form of the Junior World Championship.

Michelle Kwan won the World Championships five times, from 1996 to 2003. This is a record among women figure skaters, for which she is tied with Carol Heiss. She won medals at the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, silver at the former and bronze at the latter. She also won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships a record 9 times.
